How do I get my puppy to sleep?

Yesterday I got a new puppy. He is doing good but will not sleep if he isnt with me , if I leave him alone in his kennel he crys and barks. I finally caved in last night and let him sleep with me so I could at least get an hour or two of sleep but I dont want him getting used to it. Does anyone know any tricks to get them used to sleeping alone? Any potty training advice would be nice too. Thanks
