Need help learning how to raise funds/get sponsors

A friend of mine and I are planning a cross country biking trip in the late summer. We will be gone for about 2 1/2 months and will need between $3,000-$4000 each for camping/food/repairs, etc. I would like to do a fundraiser or get sponsors in order to fund this trip. It would be nice to do it for a good cause. The purpose of this post is not to get money, but rather to hear from some people that have done this kind of fundraising before. I really don't know where to start. If anyone could email me with advice, I would really appreciate it.
